Oh Canada!

Meeting Notes: Tuesday, February 17th

Welcome Sean!

We welcomed one of our newest members, Sean Melia, as he presented his Introductory Talk.  Sean recently moved to the area from Mission, BC, where he was a long time Rotarian.  Sean worked in the BC credit union system on the Lower Mainland and was previously employed in the Federal chartered banking system.  Sean is originally from Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan.

Sergeant-at-Arms is a regular part of Rotary Clubs, usually happening near the end of general Club meetings. It is a long-standing tradition that it done by many Rotary Clubs around the world. It is a fun way to humorously and affectionately poke fun at club members, while raising funds that will be used for the greater good of the community and our world.

Meeting: February 24th

Cochrane Toyota Community Room

President Anita invites you to join her as she welcomes Kari Rose who founded the Cochrane Cares Walking and Running Club. Also, Kari and her club members hosted The Secret Marathon Film Fund Raiser which was shown on June 25th and to date has raised $9,273 for Classrooms Without Walls the organization founded by Davis Falconer. Kari  is a Natural Health Practitioner and her mantra is : Movement is Medicine!

Trail Tales #2
What is a Signature Project:

“Carrying the Vision”

Carrying the Vison

The origins of Connecting the Trails – now commonly referred to as “The Trail” -  reach back further than many realize.

As early as 2010, a federally supported “Sea to Sea” trail vision included the concept of a regional pathway linking Calgary to Cochrane. When government funding did not materialize, the initiative stalled and the vision lost momentum.

AT the same time, regional trail development was gaining traction elsewhere. The success of the Legacy Trail between Canmore and Banff demonstrated both the value and public appetite for inter-community pathway connections.

Inspired by that success, and by the growing desire to see this portion of the Trans Canada Trail completed –  the seed was planted to move the vision forward.

To bring momentum to the idea, Rotary clubs in Calgary and Cochrane came together in 2012 to host a collaborative fundraising and awareness event - Rotary Music and Motion – held in partnership with the Glenbow Ranch Park Foundation. The event helped unite clubs around the opportunity ahead and marked an early step in mobilizing support to advance the trail connection.

Rotary Clubs in Calgary united to champion and build the 150-kilometre Rotary Mattamy Greenway encircling the city.

Here in Cochrane, our Rotary Club made a parallel commitment – to rejuvenate the earlier Calgary-to-Cochrane trail vision and carry it forward as our own Signature Project.

Renewed Vison ...

Reclaimed through Rotary leadership...

And now steadily moving toward reality.
