Previous Club Event: Meeting - May 19th

Fellow Rotarian Brian Gentles

Our club welcomed fellow Rotarian Brian Gentles from the Calgary North Rotary Club.  Brian presented on a special project initiated by Alberta Lung.

Alberta Lung is building BREATHING SPACE, a “Ronald McDonald House type” residence for lung transplant patients and their families to live, while in recovery. The first facility of its kind in Canada, it will serve northern British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and the Territories.

Relocating patients and caregivers to Edmonton for the 3-12 months required for pre- and post-recovery can cost up to $80k. An out-of-pocket expense not covered by healthcare. Some lung patients choose “death over breath”, to not burden or bankrupt their families.

New Bicycle Racks!

President Anita proudly announced that our Club has partnered with Bike Cochrane and Cochrane's Alberta Metalworks to create a new bicycle rack for cyclists in Cochrane! Funds for this project came from a regional Rotary grant. She is hopeful that this may be the start of more bicycle racks to come!

It is time to work on the meeting duties for 2026/27, which starts on July 1, 2026.

Volunteer positions include Setup/Takedown, Attendance, Sergeant and Audio Visual.

By choosing a month to support our club, you will be asked to volunteer for 2 or 4 meetings.

Volunteering early allows you to select the prime spots.

Sergeant's duties are wrapped up, except for the 2nd meeting of the month.  This is an opportunity to gently poke fun at your fellow members and raise some cash for the club, and if you are the Sergeant, you are free from fines.

Attendance-taking is a great way to put faces to names, especially valuable for new members.  And, for seasoned members, an opportunity to connect with new members.

Audio Visual needs a bit of training, but keep in mind that two members did most of the meetings this past year.  We need to avoid volunteer fatigue.

Please consider volunteering for meeting duties, and be prepared to see a sign-up sheet at the next meeting.

Thank you for giving this your attention, and for volunteering.  We cannot do this without you!

Leslie
